Juneteenth: A Historic Celebration
Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history. Even after the Civil War officially ended in May 1865, thousands of slaves in Texas remained unaware of their freedom. On June 19th, 1865, General Granger and his United States Colored Troops informed the citizens of Galveston, TX, of their emancipation through General Order Number 3. This proclamation sparked impromptu celebrations across Texas, marking the beginning of a tradition that spread nationwide and was officially recognized as a national holiday in 2021 by President Biden.
